Big night out

Saturday, August 20th, 2005.

Last night was my big night out with Claire, we’re going out to a comedy club with a social group which she’s a member of, but it didn’t get off to a good start.

She rents a room in a house in the city, and her landlord had said that I could sleep on the sofa and we’d all share a taxi. Being short of time, I packed a bag with clothes and a bottle of wine the night before and put it in the car. I just about had enough time to drive from work directly to Claire’s house, get changed, and go out.

All was going well- even the traffic was on my side. I pulled up outside her house, got the bag out of the car, locked it, walked up to the door and rang the bell. The door opened, and a guy answered who I assumed was the landlord.

“Hello”, I said, “you must be Ian”
“Are you leaking”
“Pardon. Are you Ian?”
“Yes. You’re leaking.”
“What do you mean?”
He pointed at the thin trail of wine running from where I’d put my bag down when I took it out of the car, to where I was currently standing. Shit.

The next hour was spent picking glass out of my clothes and trying to get them dry (it’s a good job it was white wine). I resorted to ironing them ’til they were dry. Ian drove us, because there was no time to get a taxi, with the windows open because of the stench of stale wine.

I’d always wanted to go to a comedy club, and although a couple of the acts weren’t great, my sides still ached from laughing. After that, I danced to bad music- badly, and drank far too much overpriced beer. At the very end of the night (about 4am) we returned to Ian’s house, and I set up camp on the sofa. Shortly afterwards, he and his girlfriend started an almighty argument right next to me, she stormed out, and he spent the next two hours sat opposite me in just his pants, telling me his love-life troubles!

With all of the problems, I’m sure that many would have described this as an awful night. But for me, after spending so many years denied of friends, and months at home alone, I was truly grateful for my big night out.

Oh that’s so funny. Sorry, I shouldn’t laugh at your misfortune. :)

Lol. Are you leaking. Sorry – saying that to a mom conjures up all sorts of images! :) Glad you got a night out anyway :)
